Furbo Redesign

Furbo is an interactive smart dog camera that lets you see, talk, and toss treats to your dog from anywhere. The app including cloud recording, dog activity alert, dog selfie alert and person alert. My goal of redesign is to simplify the UI design and keep all the feature.

PROJECT GOAL

•  Simplify existing UI design
•  Add more feature
•  Improve user flow

my role

As a product designer, redesign app according to customer's existing products and market positioning. Brand analysis, user surveys are needed.  Also doing user research, usability testing.

Product Summary

Furbo is a wireless pet camera, two-way radio, and food dispenser, which allows real-time monitoring and interactivity between pet and pet owner. Users are able to not only see their pets while they are away, but are also enabled to talk and listen to the pet, and able to mark and reinforce instances they like via the treat dispenser to train and accompany our pet throughout the day.

Market Potentia

  • An estimated 60 million dog owners leave their pets alone at home during the day.
  • Most pets owners experience anxiety and guilt when they leave for work in the morning.
  • What they need is not just a bare camera to see if their pets are ok; rather, both owner and pet can benefit from an interactive tool to reach each other when they are apart.

User Analysis

Furbo has a wealth of user survey and analysis data, and I need to select from a variety of data which I think is the most core and needs to be improved.  The data can let me know more about the user's is what I need to find at this stage.  Based on the data provided by furbo, I conclude that the core users have the following characteristics:

Millennial pet owners who has full time job and would like to use technology to improve pets life.
57% furbo users have families or in relationships.
78% users are middle to upper class.  The person with financial freedom value the bond of technology to loved ones.

Persona

Alex is a full-time engineer for a tech company in San Francisco. For his dog to enjoy a private yard, he sold his city condo and relocated to a suburban single home. He spend $1000+ per year on his pet such as toy, accessories and food.

“I love me pet more than anything. I would take a pay cut if I could bring my dog to work every day. I always felt anxious and guilty leaving my dog home alone when I left for work in the morning.”

Goals & Needs
  • Need to hear and speak to dog through camera.
  • Have more than one furbo camera in house. Need to switch frequently to observe the pet's.
  • Record and share time lapse of highlights from his dog’s day with his friends and family.
  • Look after his dog and keeps them safe at home.
Pain Points
  • Will receive hundreds of video alert in a single day. Review toss videos could get tedious.
  • The treat dispenser only have one distances for throw the treat.

Problem Statement

  • The current app have too many information without well layout.  It seems like everything is equally important but they aren’t.
  • Although the icon is cute and unique, it is not illustrative enough and needs further explanation.
  • A lot of unnecessary information can be removed to make the page concise and highlight the main features.
  • Need a clearer user flow and understand the core requirements of different users' redundant products. Design more direct user flow to help users shorten the path.

Solution and user flow

Flow is one of the most important parts of app design. Users should be able to pick up app for the first time and understand the way the pieces fit together immediately. They should be able to access any function, or studying the app’s quirks and inconsistencies. To give users that kind of seamless experience, the flow has to be perfect.

Steps
  • System showing storage capacity in treat dispenser.
  • Customer click button to toss the treat
  • System default trow distance in middle
  • Customer click yes to toss.
  • System showing storage capacity again.
Steps
  • Customer turn on barking alert
  • System default sensitivity level in medium
  • Customer change sensitivity level
  • System ask if alert video auto safe
  • Customer turn on auto safe
Design Highlight

Emphasize account name in the homepage.

Based on their app review, there are many customers complain about turbo connection problem, so I put a status icon on the right upper corner to show if the turbo is connecting with phone.

Making the complicated simple, that's creativity

Establishing detailed persona based on the research can better understand users. Because furbo company has very rich user survey information, my challenge is how to select the most core content from a wide range of information to help users improve UI design.

Simplicity is strength. As a designer, I am often lured by attractive, trendy and out of the box designs. But, I must always remember the ‘why’. The primary goal is to understand the user, their problems and then come up with a design that solves it.

Process in essential. For a project that is vast, it gives me a roadmap to navigate through what can be a foggy route. This is especially useful when I’m starting out.
